“you’re so lucky you get to play all day”

Design is the search for a magical balance between business and art; art and craft; intuition and reason; concept and detail; playfulness and formality; client and designer; designer and printer; and printer and public.

Creative Design :: As if by magic

There is great prestige attached to the word “creative.” Creative people apparently magic up ideas—wonderful solutions to the most complex problems—with the ease of a skilled magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The gathered crowd goes wild. What skill. How do they do it? I believe anyone can go to school to become a doctor, a lawyer, a mechanic, it’s by the grace of God that we creatives are given the talent to create. No amount of schooling will instill a creativeness in you if you just don’t have it.

Graphic design is the paradise of individuality, eccentricity, heresy, abnormality, hobbies and humours.

Design is the act of working out the form of something or creating a blueprint, something intended as a guide for making something else. Every design is made for a specific role or purpose or effect. Making a design is planning out in systematic and often graphic form. Its basic purpose is an anticipated outcome that is intended or that guides your planned actions. It is a clear specification for the structure, organization, appearance, etc. of a deliverable. It is an important step in the manufacturing of anything. This step just follows the step in which specifications from the clients are retrieved.

A Quilt for Oprah

A quilt designed to be a gift Oprah would give each girl upon graduating from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.
I am a longtime regular reader of Fly, a blog that features daily inspiration by graphic designer and educator Andrea Pippins. One day while perusing her site I stumbled upon this quilt.
I was struck by the fusion of tradition and modernity that Andrea managed to weave together in such a thoughtful gift, with each quilt being designed to showcase the girl’s individual name.
Combining the art of traditional South African quilting, culturally relevant inspired typography and illustration with aspirational messaging to encourage girls in leadership makes this project envy worthy.
I am not sure if Oprah has seen it, but I hope after this post she will—and consider giving Andrea a call.

Tired

I just keep getting emails from companies out of India that are advertising their services here in the states…logo desgin $10, web sites for $150.

Really?

There is not enough time in my day to be able to offer services for that low amount of money. After paying all my taxes, my internet connection, my phone bills, my computer, the cost of the applications to run on the computer, gas to get from here to there, etc. I just can’t do it.

I hope that more Americans keep their money local, and not send it outside this country.

Welcome to the new ComQuest Designs (CQD), Gainesville, FL Graphic Designer blog site

Hi, my name is Rebecca Burns and I am the founder of ComQuest Designs.

On this blog site you will find my personal graphic design portfolio (soon), as well as a blog on the main subject of graphic design which provides free graphic design tips, articles and resources on all subjects of design, ranging from, but not limited to; print design, logo design, web design, branding, typography, advertising and more.

I am self-employed as a graphic designer, specializing in the fields of corporate identity (logo) design, web design, print design and branding, with the majority of my time spent designing and implementing marketing promotions for businesses such as logos, websites, letterhead, business cards, packaging and more.

I have lived in Gainesville, Florida since 1974. I incorporated ComQuest Designs, Inc. in 1991 and have worked with eningeering, real estate and construction companies, along with equine (horse) businesses (breeding farms, vets, organizations), then reorganized in 2008 as a LLC.

I love creating, and I surround myself in it every day. I will begin posting on a daily basis to help demystify some interesting events that often confuse people when they try to create marketing pieces with little to no knowledge of what all is involved in the processes.

Question 1:  What is CMYK and RGB, more importantly, one versus the other? (coming soon, so please check back).
